You definitely will appreciate the shower floor that is perfectly designed to never give you the worries of water or moisture getting trapped in it. However costly it may be sometimes to put up such a design, you still get contented as that definitely allows you to make long-term cost savings.

The best way to achieve this is to carefully follow the process of installing a shower pan and a PVE or CPE liner.

A lot of work goes into the perfect installation of shower flows that seem to last forever. Preparing the floor bed is not an easy task. The mortar bed is made sloping to drain that is later supposed to allow water and moisture to easily flow away through it. This prevents mold, mildew and bad odors and potential damage to the mortar bed and other structures. The sloped mortar bed makes the subfloor which sometimes is also made of plywood. It is over this subfloor that the liner is laid and stuck using a bonding adhesive. Care is taken at this stage to ensure that the drain hole and its weep holes do not get blocked in any way. Another adhesive is used for the liners sides that contact the drain. For the drain hole, a plastic plumbing flange lip is used but this should only project slightly above the subfloor so as not to obstruct water flow. The liner laid on this surface is cut for the drain hole and its fastened to the surrounding framing of the shower. The liner edges are lapped and nailed against the walls about 8 inches higher. The liner material for the shower floor is best spread from the drain towards the side framing and the curbs so as to lay flat on the surface. After this you can test you shower basin for any leaking by filling it with water then making any necessary repairs.

Above the PVC or CPE liner, either plans for solid surfaces or tile floors can follow. However, solid surfaces such as swanstone shower pans are preferred to tiles for shower floors. Tiles may not last long as weaknesses develop along the grouts over time. The only thing to worry about with the solid surfaces is the grout at the transition between the floor and the wall. The installation of the shower pan is fairly easy. Sand is evenly spread over the liner surface, taking care not to clog the weep holes, and then the shower pan is carefully placed over it. The sand creates adjustable cushioning that allows the shower pan floor to sit firmly on the liner surface. After this tiles or swanstone panels can be used for the walls. Shower floors made this way last a lifetime.

Have you ever left your work place feeling low and tired all you wanted was a hot comfortable bath? Well the bathroom is your next wish. You head to the shower and wait, before you drop in, your shower curtain and liner are missing or you are welcomed by a scratched shower liner full of mildew! This may sound boring and surely is a perfect reason why you need to enjoy your private, calm stress free shower. Investing in a shower liner may be a permanent solution to most of your bathroom worries from privacy, water leakages to mildew and mold growth.

Shower time can be worrying especially if water spills all over from the bath area or mold and mildew threatens to crop all over your bathroom from the absorbent shower liner. You either don’t want to soil your decorative bathroom curtain behind your shower liner. Shower liners and not just any shower liners prevent water and soap foam from soiling your shower curtain or the bathroom floor. Always consider a water proof shower liner. Most are made of vinyl or a hundred percent polyester. Some shower liners are treated with an anti mildew but this does not mean cleaning is unnecessary.

Shower liners can be ready made or home made. You can make your own shower liner at home after buying the right material so long as you know the right measurements you need to cover up. Manufacturers may go for vinyl which has raised a lot of health concerns. Other options are polyester, hemp – a naturally anti mold and mildew or the material that makes tents for home made shower liners. Whichever you prefer, hygiene is compulsory, always ensure you regularly soak your liners in disinfectant and warm water before throwing them in the wash machine. Shower liners also come in a wide choice of colours to match your home décor.

Shower liners are easy to install as they are tailored with easy installation considerations and styles. Prices vary from stores to online. Some dealers may offer you free shipping services after you make a purchase. Shower time will thus be easy so long as you avoid molds and prevent unwanted spills that may cause slippage and serious falls in your home. Shower liners are durable and ensure your lovely shower curtain lasts a life time too. Buy one and see the difference

You are probably tired of fixing your shower base now and then and are looking for one long lasting solution. Investing in a swanstone shower base is perhaps the best option for you compared to others. You will probably be scarred by the look of a demolished tiled shower base. Water gradually infiltrates and finds its way through the grout on its floor and finally the tiled shower floor will peel out and the revealed stuff will disgust you. A preformed swanstone shower base is by far the safest option you would ever want to go for. A swanstone solid surface is 100% non porous and if installed on a firm mortar bed will never flex so will last for ages and steel keep its aesthetic value. It is made pre-sloping towards the drain and will of course be the easiest to clean.

Another great advantage with the swanstone shower base is that its installation is an easy DIY (do-it-yourself) procedure and that is why most plumbing supply companies and stores will not find it making any sense to install it for clients. Only that you need to make sure you prepare the support base properly with mortar before you install the swanstone shower pan over it. Many people may not mind the grouts and will get their walls tiled. However, this may increase the chances of leakage especially if the tiles are not installed well. But why risk doing that when you can get the matching decorative swanstone panels? These kits will create a wall that runs 72 inch high above the floor and will glue onto the existing wall surface to perfectly complement your swanstone shower base. Most household cleaners will easily clean swanstone solid surfaces that will resist mold and mildew.

The prices for the swanstone shower bases will range between $150 to about $600. Many people will advise that it’s not the cost that matters while some like me will tend to disagree. It is true that proper installation on a mortar base increases the firmness of any swanstone shower pan but the cheaper options may not last long bearing in mind that some may not be from the real plumbing supply companies. That’s why some people will complain of their shower pans eventually flexing and not even cleaning well. Do not be shortchanged by unscrupulous dealers so go for the real thing and your swanstone shower base may last a lifetime.

A shower pan is a pan that is placed below the floor tiles or below the concrete base of the shower. It helps prevent water leakage from the shower. It constitutes the floor of a shower, providing it with a firm base to stand. It is provided with a non- slip surface.

It is an indispensable part of bathroom furnishings. When installed properly, it directs all the water from the shower into the drain. Shower pans can be made from a variety of materials; synthetic such as fiberglass and acrylic or from other materials that are durable, strong and waterproof. They are also made from composite molded materials, which make them look like stone or marble. Some shower pans allow for tiles to be kept over them, to conceal and make decoration possible.

When investing in shower pans, it is important to ensure that it is of good quality, as the labor cost of replacing a shower pan, by far, exceeds the cost of buying a new one. To avoid water penetration, special care must be given to the joints between the wall tiling and the shower pan. It takes anywhere between four to six hours to install or replace a shower pan. Replacement requires advanced plumbing skill and light demolition. While fixing the pipe into the drain assembly from underneath, the help of one other person may also be required.

A shower pan consists of two parts: the pan and the drain assembly. The first part of the drain is a chrome plated ring. It is threaded on the outside to allow a nut to be screwed into it from below. The nut, in turn, tightens the ring to two gaskets; a waterproof gasket on top and the metal gasket below. These are the parts of the drain assembly that direct the water from the shower into the drainpipe, preventing leaks. The final part of the drain is the strainer. The strainer is a mesh or metal screen that prevents large objects from falling into and clogging the drainpipe. The strainer is the last part to be installed. Once the shower pan is completely installed, the strainer is the only part that shows.

In new shower enclosures, quite often, the floor of the shower is made of ceramic tile, sometimes even grout. Though, a traditional shower pan is not needed in such cases, leaks must be regularly checked for I such shower enclosures. People often think that a ceramic tile floor will not retain water, that it will naturally slope towards the drain and shed all the water. It is however, possible that a substantial amount of water seeps through the tile and grout into the mortar layer. If the leak is big, it can lead to mildew and other problems. An alternative in such situations would be to use a shower liner or another impenetrable layer under the tile to serve the same purpose that a shower pan would.

To decide what exactly needs to be there on your shower walls is a bit tricky and confusing. Several factors are there which need to be considered before you go on with the actual mounting of the shower wall.

Most Important pointers on the material:
* Water resistant material
* Decorative material
* Easy to clean material
* Long lasting material

Every material has its own pros and cons and it is a tough task to decide on them especially for non-experts and common man.

This article would help you decide the right material for your shower and reduce on the immense effort you going to take deciding on one. Following are few pointers on covering materials for your bathroom:

Fiberglass One-Piece Units
Builders use this material when the house is first built. These are very cost effective materials and can be easily installed. The materials seamless design prevents water leaking into walls.

Advantage
1. Cost effective

2. Prevents water leaking into walls

Disadvantage
1. Not recommended for re-modeling bathrooms, as this is a one-piece unit and may not prove cost effective.

2. Has the tendency to become yellow after years of cleaning and rubbing.

Acrylic Sheet Materials
This material is commonly used as a decorative material which comes in various colors. These fit through most door ways and are easily installable. These materials are inexpensive and easily affordable. The acrylic material is of plastic kind and is used to cover the pan and floor apart from the walls. They get easily scratched and are difficult to clean over years. Due to the presence of seams when two walls meet, caulking and slapping are done by contractors. But most often caulking does not provide long term water proofing for walls. Caulking also allows fungus to form and it gets discolored and dirty.

Advantage
1. Inexpensive
2. Easily installable
3. Comes in various colors and is decorative

Disadvantage
1. Easily scratched
2. Difficult to clean
3. Forms Fungus

Corian®, Cultured Marble or Solid Surface Sheet Materials
This material is very similar to Acrylic but is stronger. This material also has the same problems faced with acrylic material. It also works most expensive than acrylics. When installing these materials, it is advisable to Squeegee and clean your shower every time you use it.

Advantage
1. Easy to maintain
2. Stronger than acrylic

Disadvantage
1. Expensive
2. Faces problems faced by Acrylic

Ceramic Tile
These are man-made materials that have a glaze coat that is baked in the oven. This comes in various colors and designs and takes more labor to install than other materials. This is the most expensive material compared to others but is worth the price and is extremely durable. This material when used with the right way of installation proves long lasting and takes lowest of maintenance.

Advantage
1. Extremely durable
2. Low maintenance

Disadvantage
1. Expensive
2. Consumes more labor

Building a new shower base can be expensive; getting it wrong can cost you a small fortune. This article will explain in simple terms how to build your own shower base in five basic steps. Make sure you follow the steps carefully or you might just end with an expensive mess and still have to shower at your parent’s home.

1.)    Make your base waterproof.

Shower floors leak for two main reasons, 1) the grout isn’t waterproof or 2) the tile isn’t waterproof. Even if they are it is a must to build a waterproof barrier for your shower base. This consists of a vinyl sheet.

Place the sheet on top of the first masonry layer and you can be sure that the water stops there.

2.)  Don’t forget the slope.

This is my number one pet hate with shower bases. It’s disgusting to get into a shower to find you are stepping into the dirty water of the previous user, nice eh?

The worst part is how easy it is to build it right, and it doesn’t cost a penny more. So please do me a favor and put a nice slope into your shower base. Over the waterproof membrane, the vinyl sheet you need to place the second or top masonry layer. Don’t forget to slope the base toward the drain. If you don’t do this water will accumulate on the floor base and the membrane sheet creating a haven for mold, mildew and mosquitoes larva, depending in which part of the world you live.

3.) Remember you need two drains.

Make sure you remember to create a second drain for the membrane sheet. This sheet is designed to collect any water that falls through the mortar or tiles. If there is no drain then you have simply built an expensive water collector and an inefficient one at that. So remember, two drains, one for the shower floor where you stand and one for the waterproof membrane on top of the bottom masonry layer.

4.)    Build with mud.

Most of the shower base floor you will need to build with mud. By mud we mean sand, Portland cement and water; you might have heard it called deck mud. Make sure you get your mix right; you don’t want unseemly cracks in your brand new shower base.

5.)    Don’t forget the walls.

I know this is a shower base guide but I’m betting you occasionally wet the walls of the shower. This means that the walls need to be waterproof also. This is done in the same way as the shower base. You need to build in a waterproof liner behind the wall’s shower tiles. This liner will keep water and moisture from the walls, avoiding mold and mildew from building up in your bathroom.

It is worth spending the time to build your shower base well. You can buy plastic shower bases that can be installed in half the time, the only problem being they don’t last. Quality takes time and money, however this is a simple project you can do yourself. So get your working clothes out, give your wife a surprise and start building your new shower base.
